Quick Everyday Wavy Hair Tutorial
So I’ve finally taken a minute to sit down and work on the wavy hair tutorial that I promised AGES AGO. Let me first preface this by saying that I would NOT qualify myself as “good at hair” in any way, shape, or form. All I know is that I have hair, and lots of it, and that it has a natural wave to it that really takes to some light, messy loose waves, so this is how I tend to style it when I want to look semi-put together!
In a past life, I only knew the straightener. I ALWAYS straightened my hair to within an inch of its life. Like stick straight, that kinda straight. The main reasoning behind this was I could not for the life of me, figure out how to use a curling iron. Every single time I’d come out with kinks in my hair, and the curl just would not stay!
THEN, magic happened, and I was introduced to the curl by straightener trend, and my life was forever changed. For some reason, it was just so much easier for me to figure out how to curly my hair with a straightener, so for the last 5+ years, that’s how I’ve styled my hair! Either stick straight, or curled with my trusty CHI. The one thing I never truly loved about curling my hair with my straightener was how long it took, and now that I have two kids and even LESS time to get ready during the day, I needed something that was quicker, and frankly, more forgiving then straightener curls. I’d been seeing so many of my friends with these loose, big beachy waves/curls and finally found out HOW they were doing it - the answer, a curling wand!
So I jumped in, and failed miserably about the first 23455 times I tried it. I was ready to throw in the towel until I asked you guys for tips and boy was that a game changer! I also watched a few (re: like one) Youtube videos for some quick pointers, and I became a MASTER at the curling wand. Now, I’m here to share what I’ve learned!
How long does it take to curly your hair with a wand?
For me, I was spending anywhere between 15-20 minutes curling my hair with a straightener previously. Now I can get my whole head of long, full, hair curled and down in about 5-6 minutes.
What wand do you use?
I did a bunch of research and found that more expensive isn’t always better! Based off follower suggestions and online reviews, I ended up choosing this ceramic conical wand and it’s been a trooper so far!
What size barrel do you use?
If you want smaller, tighter curls, go with the .5-1 inch wand.
If you want looser, bigger curls, go with the 1-1.5 inch wand.
I started with the smaller wand and exchanged it for a larger barrel.
Do I need a heat glove?
Totally your choice. I purchased one because I thought I needed it but it was SO HARD to use the wand with it. I couldn’t FEEL my hair, so I had a hard time handling the wand and the hair to get the curls right. I prefer to not use a heat glove, and just be careful not to get my hand too close to the barrel.
Tips and tricks to get the curls right
Hold the barrel upside down when you’re curling your hair. The narrow end of the barrel should be pointed down, with the thicker part of the barrel closer to your roots.
Wrap the curls around the barrel AWAY from your face, especially when curling the hair that frames your face. You can switch up the direction of the curl if you want as you move towards the back of your hair for more volume, but it can look weird too close to your face.
For loose, more natural looking waves, leave about .5 - 1 inch of your hair at the bottom UNCURLED.
Make sure your hair is completely dry before curling.
What styling products do you use?
I actually don’t really use any hold products to maintain my curls because I like them when they fall slightly. I have yet to find a safer hairspray that I love, but I’m about to try these two brands to see if I like them:
Innersense
Rahua
That’s it! That’s all she wrote! As a mom of two, with limited time, I need hair that’s easy. I’m not, nor will I ever be your go-to beauty blogger, but I believe I can offer value for women like me who are just trying to make it through life looking semi-put together!
